A unit is:

1. A set amount of money that one wagers on a game. For example, if you commonly bet $50 per game, then your unit is 50 bucks. If you find a game you really like and want to bet 2 units, then you'd bet 100.

2. A schlong, cod-piece, yambag, slang term for Jim and the twins also known as Ding-Dong, tallywacker, or Big Pete

A lot of posters use units as a % of bankroll.

1 unit =1%
2 unit =2%

Of course if you follow some poters this certainly wouldn't make since you can't have 3 50 unit plays at once 150% of bankroll. There are some posters that have unlimited funds so maybe that is where they come up with those plays.

thank you both for your help. but, if someone has 5 units next to a bet, does that mean they are betting $250? the whole percentage thing is crazy.

It depends---5 units of my banroll may not be the same as your 5 units...

I play $200 a game as 1 unit (and NEVER play more that 3 units on ONE GAME)...

So IF I were to play 5 units, I'd bet $1000.

But if you play $50 a game, your 5 units would be $250...
